Antivirus Software
What to look for and what to avoid. |
![]() |
A virus on your computer or even computer network can be devastating. Once in your computer they are very difficult to get out so keeping them out in the first place is absolutely essential.
There are many different ways that a virus can get into your computer and there are also many different variations of viruses such as spyware or trojans.
To keep the security of your computer to a maximum you should be doing at least the following:
| 1. | Ensure that you have a firewall in place. This could be a router firewall or a windows firewall. You can even have both running for extra protection. |
| 2. | Antivirus software running but also you need to ensure that a) it is kept up to date and b) it is configured correctly. For example make sure that it is set to scan everything the computer does some companies call this a resident shield and basically it scans files or emails as you are opening them. AVG has a number of different packages including a free anti virus download for residential customers just wanting 1 copy. |
| 3. | Make sure that either your antivirus software package has spyware or malware included or get a separate package to do this. Microsoft defender is a free download that protects you from spyware and unwanted pop ups. |
| 4. | Don't click on anything that you are not sure about. If you get a popup that doesn't look right always close that window by clicking on the X in the top right corner of the screen rather than clicking on close or anything in the pop up box. |
What can I do if I get a virus?
Depending on the severity of the virus you may be able to remove it by trying these actions:
| 1. | If you have Windows XP or Vista try running the system restore to reset your computer (programs only not your data) to a previous state |
| 2. | Update your virus software and then run a virus scan |
| 3. | There are tools out there that can help too. You should be able to find some on the support pages of the virus software that you are using. |
| 4. | Delete everything in your temp folders |
| 5. | If you are comfortable using regedit (you have to know what you are doing or you can stop windows working altogether) then see if the virus is being launched from here and delete the entry. |
| 6. | If none of these work or you are not sure about having a go then either a) restore your computer using the recovery disk that came with your computer (**this will set your computer back to when you bought it i.e. ALL your data and programs that you have installed will be lost) or b) get in a professional |
